R— / Run

—E / Europe

Artist-Run Europe is part how-to resource, part history, and part socio-political critique of the conditions, organisational models, and role of artist-led practice within contemporary visual art and society. An ongoing research and publishing project with multiple contributors, iterations and intended outcomes, it includes case studies of spaces and projects, essay texts, and a detailed index of artist-run spaces from across Europe.

The index is an extensive database of both active artist-run spaces and projects as well as acting as an important archive of now-defunct initiatives. A tool to quantify and compare the disparate attributes, organisational models, funding structures and aims, users can search specific terms or attributes such as location, status, type, or navigate the index by country. New entries are invited and can be submitted via the Submit page.

Mars Patent

Hamburg/WorldWideWeb
Founded:
1999
Have you ever dreamed of seeing works of art and theory on Mars? Now you can! THE MARS PATENT is an interplanetarian project founded by Helene von Oldenburg and Claudia Reiche. THE MARS PATENT invites you to experience culture on a fascinating and promising site. Millions of miles away the red planet, Mars, now lies within your reach. Since the early days THE MARS PATENT committee has been working hard to find a discriminating place for your desires which allows a new sight on Earth. But such a place could only be realized by means of a recently developed device, the HRM_1.0n, the "High Reality Machine". The HRM_1.0n transforms the vision of a viable martian place for your objects into reality and the mode of global sharing. The HRM_1.0n will become a potent device in your hands to place your things on THE MARS PATENT's Mars Exhibition Site (MES): THE MARS PATENT offers the MES to you as a free experimental area and invites every thing which does not fit on Earth but tends towards the MES. A thing? A real thing? Could be your idea, your object, your work, your protest, your desire... THE MARS PATENT will take the full risk of handling, transporting and sustaining the concepts and objects up to MES, but can't take any guaranties for their condition on Earth. So: Send your projects to THE MARS PATENT!

SCOTTY

Berlin
Founded:
2006
The artist-run project space is located in Kreuzberg, Oranienstrasse, and is organized by 9 artists. Situated in the smallest house in Kreuzberg, SCOTTY provides a platform for artists and its members as curators as well as invited guests, allowing the most freedom while maximizing group potential. Thematic group exhibitions are held at regular intervals, along with organized performances and film evenings. The focus lies on contemporary social and cultural-political issues. SCOTTY operates independently of the market, embracing self-autonomy and a non-hierarchical structure. Beyond the work conducted in this space in Berlin-Kreuzberg, SCOTTY’s members initiate and organize supra-regional and international collaborations with other project spaces. This strengthens the position of autonomously working artists, providing nationwide visibility and networking opportunities. Despite the pronounced individuality of its members, they share a common desire to create new opportunities for artistic actions and ideas. The vitality of SCOTTY stems from the consistent, self-determined implementation of democratic agreements among its members during the planning and realization of projects.

screen service

Founded:
2022
screen service is a service-oriented artist collective supporting early career artists with screen-led practices in or from Ireland. We are committed to providing a platform for experimentation and connectivity. We curate and facilitate projects encouraging the development of emergent media practice in all its manifestations. We are based online, and work with artists in Ireland, and Irish artists living abroad. The model we sustain is artist-run, peer-led and reliant on and propelled by the creative practitioners we work with. We gravitate towards artists who have practices that embrace (but are not limited to) the following: moving image, photography, multimedia installation, expanded cinema, text, performance, VR/AR, sound, workshops, multi-disciplinary collaboration, web-based, analogue or digital media processes. We recognise the importance of inclusivity and aim to provide space for active, non-exclusionary gathering.
